Genia Fights Sootra Trio Volume 2

TRIO Manga Volume 2: Action-Packed & Yet Spiritual

Sangita Ekka, October 6, 2024March 10, 2025

I cannot wait to watch the Trio Anime!

TRIO Manga is revolutionizing the Indian anime scene, and its second volume is a unique and captivating reading experience.

For a quick recap, the first volume introduces our heroines – Genia, Bonnie, and Sonnie– teenage girls from different ethnicities in India who stay in an orphanage. We are introduced to their friends, the sci-fi theme, and a sneak peek into a larger conspiracy waiting to unfold for the girls from the edge of the universe.

Genia Centered

The second volume centers on Genia.

She is represented as the athletic one in the group, and the events unfold to bring out her personality. It also offers a glimpse into her past, a mysterious protector, Juno, and an evolution of her spiritual side through precognitive dreams.

The book also introduces Sootra, a femme fatale smoke queen sent by the villain Eka. She is represented via pretty rad drawings. I can only wonder and wait for the anime version to watch her in full glory.

Personally, the action-packed last few sections of the book left me in awe. The fight scenes between our heroines and their adversaries are spectacular.

It reminded me of watching Dragon Ball Z as a child and Might Guy from Naruto as an adult. The creators have done justice to the varied strengths of female anime characters.

Promising Improvements

Trio Volume 2 has shown tremendous potential and promise, taking a giant leap forward in manga-style storytelling from its predecessor.

Drawings have more perspectives, expressive text, cleaner art, and better readability. The panels are neatly segregated, and the background doesn’t clutter the visual feed. Trio is taking shape like a popular Japanese manga, yet it keeps the Indian touch.

TRIO as a Cultural Export

Pick any anime or manga, and the essence of Japan is deeply embedded in them through location, architecture, food, aesthetics, and jargon. Popular brands like Pizza Hut, Gucci, and Nissan have also shown up with manga’s global reach.

It would be more appropriate to discuss Indian cultural exports in detail in TRIO Volume 3, which takes the girls out of Jamshedpur and into Kolkata and provides a lot more perspective on the diversity of the subcontinent.

Final Thoughts

For a long time, Japanese manga and anime fans have had the privilege of watching a story develop and being a part of the journey. The same privilege is now available to Indian anime lovers via Trio, which meets international standards reasonably.

Someday, I will have a complete collection of TRIO Manga, which will share the shelf with my other proud possessions.
