International men’s day passed and I am sure; many of us didn’t have a single clue that something like this even exists. No Google doodles. No posts over Facebook. No trending hashtags. No “A man gotta do what a man gotta do” stuffs. Nothing. Even some men don’t know that they got a day they can call their own and celebrate it just like the rest of their 365 days; with beer and cigarettes (quantity increased).
Why so much buzz around women’s day then? A week before this day we are bombarded with images of women as mothers, sisters, friends and lovers with inspiring stories; and almost nothing when it comes to the day for men. Don’t they make good fathers or brothers or friends or lovers? Don’t they inspire? Aren’t they above the misplaced sense of “all men are the same”? Aren’t they also in the need of empowerment for the misuse of feminism on them?
Many a times I brooded over the disturbed yin-yang balance of the world and wished that men be back on Mars; women be back on Venus and this good earth to breathe a sigh of relief; but today it feels like an epiphany as I realize the tremendous impact men make in a woman’s life.
The definition of a man evolves through many forms and sculpts her everyday life. These are the creatures who would pick up a fight with you secretly wishing and sometimes ending up attempting Pedigree or Tombstone Piledriver when they think that mom is not looking. These are also the creatures who would look for you when they have screwed up somewhere or make you learn to ride a bike or get you tremendously extra food than what you asked for. These belong to the same set of homo sapiens who cherish, sorry; who are proud of the manly image of being careless, at times disgusting (remember the smelly feet) who can wear a three week old unwashed t-shirt with “swag” written all over it.
Sure they can be the assholes who would make you wait for 40 minutes in the sun, climb your bed with their dirty feet, play a disastrous role in kitchen and the rest of the times simply act like a jerk on purpose! But behind all the drama that they would never confess to, is a heart that is good and innocent.
The men I know have stood by me at my worst; filled me with inspiration, angered me to the extent to set my demons free; given me intuitive suggestions (a quality I seriously doubted they could possess), have pampered me with the food they made and also introduced me to the lighter sins that we all must commit in life.
So, this a small tribute to all the men in the world who continue to be good, kind and helpful to other men, women and children. Without you, earth would have been dull. You are not dinosaurs. Thank you for existing! Amen.
